Many aspects of London life are also cleverly incorporated from the crowded streets, the busy people, rushing around with no time for anybody, the iconic red London phone box (identifiable by people from all over the world) the tall, grey buildings and the sense of multiculturalism and diversity, depicted by illustrations of children, from various backgrounds in a playground. The simple text and stark, but captivating illustrations work perfectly together and the autumnal setting, skillfully captures Beegu’s emotions of sadness and loneliness. The narrative is cleverly told from the perspective of a child and her experience of arriving in a foreign place, the difficulties she encounters of not being able to communicate and the rejection and isolation she experiences because of her difference in language and appearance. In her struggle to fit in, little Beegu faces hostility and rejection from everyone she encounters (namely adults), however, despite her appearance, a group of little children befriend her. Finding herself stranded in an unfamiliar world, she sets out to find shelter. She crash-lands on earth and discovers that she has become separated from her family. This emotive picture book exemplifies the themes of separation, loneliness, rejection, hostility, isolation, anxiety, difference, kindness, acceptance and belonging.īeegu tells the incredibly moving tale of a young alien, who looks much like a yellow rabbit with three eyes and long, floppy ears.
